Petition to Support the Genesee County Animal Shelter becoming a “Minimum Kill” Facility

In 2007, 2,825 dogs/puppies and 4,446 cats/kittens were euthanized at the Genesee County Animal Control Shelter. By signing the following petition, you acknowledge your support for the Friends of Genesee County Animal Shelter, Inc. and their mission to help the Shelter become a “Minimum Kill” facility. With your signature, you agree that you would like to see the following procedures implemented at the Genesee County Animal Shelter in Flint Township, MI immediately:

* The only animals that are to be put down are those suffering from an incurable illness or severe pain, have rabies, have shown aggression towards people, or are breed-restricted animals.

* All animals (except for those fitting the above criteria) are to be considered adoptable.

* All adoptable pets are to be listed on petfinder.com and other internet sources.

* All adoptable animals are to be placed up for adoption for a minimum of 5 days, during which time they would be available to both the public and rescues at full adoption fees. Certain animals may be offered to rescues immediately at reduced or free rates if deemed not highly adoptable by the staff.

* Allow ALL working rescues and volunteer groups to adopt animals at a reduced fee or for free if an animal has been placed for adoption for 5 days and has not found a home. Groups must provide proof that they spay/neuter and provide proper vetting for animals in their care.

* Allow screened volunteers to foster shelter animals in their home until adopted. In the event of overcrowding, this route would be used as an alternative to euthanizing a healthy, adoptable animal.

* Allow volunteers to assist with the writing of cage cards, taking pictures (if needed) for the Flint Journal’s “Pet of the Week” or other publicity opportunities and assist with the task of picture taking and management of the Petfinder.com adoption website.

* Help the Shelter to be more “visitor friendly” by adjusting its hours to include staying open later one day a week and longer on Saturday to accommodate customers who work, have a long drive, etc. Hours can easily be created for this by opening the Shelter later or closing the Shelter earlier one day a week.

* STOP the killings of adoptable animals. This includes killings based on age, common treatable illness, and a short hold period.
