FRIENDS OF GENESEE COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER, INC. |
|
The Friends of Genesee County Animal Shelter, Inc (FGCAS) is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization dedicated to improving the adoption/rescue rates at our local Genesee County Animal Control/Shelter. Other goals include improving conditions for the animals during their time at the Shelter. |
|
FGCAS is made up of caring, animal loving residents of Genesee County. We hope to work with the Board of Commissioners, management and staff to help Animal Control become model Shelter that others in the state will turn to for inspiration. |
| Several in our group also actively volunteer at Animal Control so we know the urgent need for volunteers there. Many times, there is not enough time or volunteers to make sure very adoptable dog or cat has a chance to be walked, bathed, brushed or even just petted at least once every day. These activities and socialization are a crucial part to helping keep the animals at the Shelter emotionally healthy and ready for adoption. |
| Getting out for at least one daily walk is especially important to the larger or more active dogs because most are housed in cages no larger than 26 by 52 inches. Walking, bathing and playing with these once loved pets (and letting them know they're not forgotten) can go a long way toward helping them find new homes. |
|
Update July 1st, 2009!! The Shelter is in the process of forming an official Volunteer Program that will be managed by Shelter personnel. Please either go to the Shelter and ask for a Volunteer application or contact us for more information. We applaud the Director for this decision because it shows that attitudes are changing. Volunteers are no longer viewed as being "more trouble than they're worth" and are finally being recognized as a vital part of Shelter reform. |
|
Attention Current FGCAS'ers!! Because of the new Shelter managed volunteer program, FGCAS is changing the way our levels are referred to. We will no longer be called FGCAS "volunteers" but will be called Active Members or Supporters. Active members who maintain a consistent level of participation are will be allowed voting rights. |
|
What's the difference? Active members have an active role in our organization and the pursuance of it's goals. They may volunteer in the Shelter's program, help manage the website, assist in planning and/or participating during adoption, publicity or fundraising events. They might help with grant writing, soliciting supplies from local businesses or making bedding for the animals. There are endless ways for Active members to contribute and we're looking for you and your ideas! |
|
Supporter are individuals who have pledged their support for FGCAS's goals and vision. Supporters can help by spreading the word about the stray and adoptable animals at Animal Control and by stand by to write letters to County officials about issues concerning Animal Control. |
If you love animals and want to make a difference right in your own back yard, please join us!

JUST BECAUSE, WE HAD TO SHARE!! |
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." ~ Mahatma Gandhi ~
"I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it." ~ Abraham Lincoln ~
The basis of all animal rights should be the Golden Rule: we should treat them as we would wish them to treat us, were any other species in our dominant position. ~Christine Stevens ~
"I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. "God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?" God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly. I have done something," He replied. "I created you." ~Jim Willis
